Cow cloning research. Light micrograph of a cow oocyte (round) during an attempt to clone a Brahman bull named Chance. To clone a cow an oocyte is taken from a female and its nuclear material is removed. Genetic material is taken from a body (somatic) cell of the animal to be cloned and injected into the empty nucleus. The resulting cloned oocyte is grown to the embryo stage and then implanted in a foster cow's uterus. It took 189 attempts to clone Chance. The clone,named Second Chance,was the first calf cloned from an adult male. Photographed at Texas A&M University,USA,in 1999. Magnification: x350 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
