Typhoon Saomai. Satellite image of typhoon Saomai over Taiwan (bottom centre) and China (upper left) on 10th August 2006. Saomai is the most powerful storm to hit China in 50 years, claiming over 100 lives. Typhoons are huge cyclonic storm systems of high winds blowing around a central eye. They form in areas of relatively calm ocean around the equator. As moist air is forced upwards,a low pressure region forms that becomes the eye of the storm.
