Hurricane Ivan over the Gulf of Mexico,on 15th September 2004 at 1345 GMT. Florida is to the right of Ivan. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour (kph). They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas,but lose energy quickly over land.
