Ancient Egyptian obelisk at Karnak,Egypt. This is the obelisk of pharaoh Tuthmosis I,ruler of Egypt around 1500 BC. It is 20 metres high, made from red granite, and weighs over 130 tonnes. It was raised as a monument to the god Amun. Originally, there was a single line of inscription down the centre of each face of the obelisk, and this tells of Tuthmosis I. The two lines of inscriptions either side of this central line were added by later pharaohs, such as Rameses IV and VI. The temple complex at Karnak is one of the largest in the world, containing many monuments erected and added to over the centuries by the Ancient Egyptians | |
