Car pollution research. Optical equipment being used to monitor pollution from a diesel engine. The engine (not seen) has been fitted with optical access ports (quartz windows) to allow the pollutants to be observed as they are produced in the combustion chamber. Photographic and laser techniques are used to monitor the pollutants. Diesel engines use compression ignition, and are more efficient and produce lower amounts of gaseous pollutants than spark ignition engines. However, they produce more particulate pollutants. Studying the effects of different fuels and engines can help the design of cleaner, less polluting engines. This engine is a common rail, diesel engine | |
