Car pollution research. Researchers using a laser (red beam, lower centre) to monitor pollution from a diesel engine. The engine has been fitted with optical access ports (quartz windows) to allow the pollutants to be observed as they are produced in the combustion chamber. Diesel engines use compression ignition, and are more efficient and produce lower amounts of gaseous pollutants than spark ignition engines. However, they produce more particulate pollutants. Studying the effects of different fuels and engines can help the design of cleaner, less polluting engines. This engine is a non-direct injection, common rail, diesel engine. The researchers are wearing goggles to protect their eyes from the laser | |
