Air pollution research. Gas supply storage hut for the FACE (Free-Air CO2/O3 Enrichment) project that investigates the effects of ozone (O3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution on plants. Ozone and/or carbon dioxide are supplied to a pipe-ring (centre left) and pumped into the air from the top of a ring of vertical pipes (white,2.5 metres tall). Ozone is a gas formed by chemical reactions between oxygen and pollutants in the lower atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is formed by burning fossil fuels. Levels of both pollutants are predicted to rise in the future. Carbon dioxide increases plant growth, but ozone reduces it. The FACE site, started in 1989,is in Wisconsin,USA | |
