Polluted river. River polluted by effluent from a paper mill. The white foam on the surface of the water contains a mixture of organic compounds. These include poisonous organochloride chemicals, especially nonylphenol and trichlorophenol. Nonylphenols may cause hormonal changes in fish and humans by binding to receptors for the female hormone (oestrogen). Chlorophenols affect cell development by interfering with fundamental biochemical processes within them. Organochlorides are produced during the bleaching of wood pulp during the manufacture of paper. Photographed at Sirumugai in Tamil Nadu,India | |
