Forest destruction by acid rain. View of woodland devastated by the effects of acid-polluted rain. The dead trees have been cleared, and new trees planted. However, these rarely live for more than 15 years, eventually being killed by the same pollution. These trees are in the Czech Republic, near the border with Germany,in one of the most polluted parts of central Europe. Emissions of sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen from industry in the former East Germany and Czechoslovakia have caused this widespread death of trees.
