Rice cultivation. People planting rice seedlings in a paddy field. Rice is the principal cereal crop of the wet regions of the tropics. It is derived from grass of the species Oryza sativa. The yield is very large and rice is said to be the staple food of one third of the world population. During its growing period (150-200 days) it needs to be flooded by heavy rain or by irrigation. The rice stem is adapted to allow oxygen to pass downwards to the waterlogged roots. Growing the rice seeds in nurseries and transplanting the seedlings into paddy fields is labour-intensive but gives a greater yield than seed sown directly in the field. Photographed in Thailand | |
