Clear-cut forestry. Stumps of trees on a clear-cut hillside. Clear-cut forestry involves cutting down every tree within a given region, rather than selecting only the largest. This method allows the soil to recover faster, and allows more rapid replanting of the forest. However, destruction of the original old growth forests and replanting with single species (monocultures) results in massive loss of biodiversity. Clear-cutting on hillsides can also result in soil erosion and landslides. This photo was taken near the perimeter of Olympic National Park,Washington,USA. The park is surrounded by clear-cut areas and has effectively become a biological island | |
