Amazon Basin forest fires from space. Smoke plumes (grey) drifting over Mato Grosso State,on the southern edge of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The fires have been set deliberately to clear forest for use as agricultural land. Intact forest is dark green, while cleared land is tan or reddish-brown. Peak burning periods occur during the dry season of June-September. Photographed on 30 June 2003 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA's TERRA satellite. Such data are used by the Brazilian National Space Research Institute (INPE) to measure the rate of deforestation | |
