Ivory mammoth. Ivory sculpture of a mammoth carved out of a tusk from the same animal,Mammuthus Primigenius, the woolly mammoth. This ivory was found in Russia and may have come from a tusk over 3 metres long. Mammoth ivory and bones were used by stone age (palaeolithic) people to make simple huts in which to live,as well as hunting implements. During the end of the stone age (45,000-10,000 years ago),before they became extinct, mammoths coexisted with humans. They had long hair over a dense woolly undercoat and a layer of insulating fat under their thick skins. These adaptions enabled them to survive near the ice sheets during glacial periods (ice ages) | |
