Hut of mammoth bones. An upper palaeolithic (stone age) hut made by prehistoric humans out of mammoth bones. This hut was found at Mezin in the Ukraine. It is almost entirely composed of mammoth bones except for bent wooden branches and supporting struts. The entrance comprises two upturned skulls with one tusk in each skull forming the entrance arch. Around the outer base of the hut are limb bones; above these are triangular shoulder blades; and on the roof curved rib-bones. The hut was then covered in the skin of the mammoth. It afforded protection against mammoths and a harsh climate. Upper palaeolithic was 45,000-10,000 years ago | |
