Fossil crinoid or sea lily in a mudstone deposit. The crinoids are marine echinoderms dating back to the Lower Ordovician period (500 million years ago). This crinoid attached itself to the sea floor with a stalk (at lower centre),and captured food with feathery arms that formed a cup. Thousands of extinct crinoid species have been found as fossils, but only a few hundred sea lily species still exist today.
