Homo habilis (OH 24) skull. Frontal view of the reconstructed skull with bone fragments of the fossil hominid Homo habilis (OH 24) known as "Twiggy". The upper jaw includes examples of preserved teeth. Specimen OH 24 was found at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. The name Homo habilis means "handy man". H.habilis is known to have used stone tools. Fossil remains show it had a upright gait,a relatively small brain, but a large body size. The molar teeth, although large, were narrow compared with those of other hominids. H.habilis is intermediate between Australopithecus and Homo sapiens. It ranged widely across Africa, and lived 2.0 to 1.6 million years ago | |
