Archaeological excavation of a site at the Lazaret caves in southern France. These caves have yielded a wide range of early human remains and artifacts, dating back around 200,000 years. At this time, stone tools were extensively used. Evidence for a dwelling of wood, hide and stone has also been found in the caves. The home is thought to have contained at least one purpose-built hearth as well. This period of human history is known as the Acheulean, and is characterised by chipped and flaked stone tools. At the time,Europe was inhabited both by early modern humans (Homo sapiens) and by Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) | |
