A specimen of mineral calcite mined in Cumbria. Calcite is a typical sedimentary mineral formed by chemical precipitation through the evaporation of solutions rich in calcium bicarbonate,or extraction through the action of marine and freshwater organisms. Its crystals are hexagonal- rhombohedral. Calcite is used in the building industry to make flux and slag; in the manufacture of fertilizers for soil enrichment and in the chemical industry. Clear calcite was formerly used to make prisms | |
