Scallop shells incorporated in sandstone. This sandstone was laid down fairly recently,in the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from 1.81 million to 11,500 years ago. The rock formed from the deposition of sand in a shallow sea, which was lithified under pressure from overlying layers. Animals that died during this period were incorporated into the rock. Such inclusions are known as bioclasts. Photographed at Villa di Nerone,Italy | |
