Limestone cliffs. These cliffs have formed from a layer of limestone that is harder than the rocks surrounding it. This makes the limestone more resistant to erosion, and it is left behind as the other rocks erode away, leaving the limestone to form the cliffs seen here. These cliffs form part of what is known as a cirque,a circular bowl of rock sculpted from the mountainside by the action of a glacier. This cirque is the Creux-du-Van,in Neuchatel,Switzerland, and is part of the Jura mountains. The cliffs are made of Malm limestone, which is harder than the surrounding Marl rocks | |
