Computer simulation of the devastating eruption of the volcano Vesuvius (Italy) which occurred in 79 AD.,when the towns of Pompei and Ercolano were destroyed. It shows the particle density 300 seconds after the eruption up to a distance of 7km from the volcano; yellow shows the highest densities declining through red and blue. The model confirms that such an eruption can cause complete destruction in a 7km radius in an area where now 1 million people work and live,in about 15 minutes or less. A phoenix cloud (round bottom centre),is formed by the finest particles lifted by air currents where the volcano slope flattens | |
