Santorini volcano. Artwork of an eruption of the Santorini volcano on the Aegean island of Thira (or Santorini). The glow from the fires in the volcano's craters is being reflected by huge clouds. Santorini volcano is associated with a destructive geological plate margin; many of the Aegean islands have a volcanic origin. Thira is a ring-shaped island about 100km north of Crete. Its shape is due to a huge volcanic explosion in about 1470 BC which destroyed the centre of the island.
