Arctic ozone research. Weather balloon being prepared indoors in the Arctic before its ascent to the ozone layer in the stratosphere,15-35 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. This experiment is a Lagrangian study of the chemistry of the polar vortex,a seasonal atmospheric phenomenon that,together with chlorine released by human activities,destroys ozone. Ozone is a gas that filters most of the harmful ultraviolet component of sunlight. This work is part of THESEO (the Third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone),a joint project by NASA and the European Union. It took place from November 1999 to March 2000,at Esrange Research Station,Kiruna,which lies inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland
