Arctic ozone research. Weather balloon being launched from the Arctic to study the levels of ozone gas in the stratosphere. The stratospheric ozone layer is 15-35 kilometres above the surface of the Earth, and filters most of the harmful ultraviolet component of sunlight. Ozone levels decline over the Arctic each spring as it is destroyed by chlorine released by human activities. This research, carried out in the period from November 1999 to March 2000,was part of a joint project by NASA and the European Union, the THESEO (Third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone).
