MODEL RELEASED. Sunshine detector. Meteorologist adjusting a radiation detector mounted on a tower. There are a wide variety of different measurements taken, such as direct sunlight, diffuse sunlight, and various spectral components of sunlight. The measurements here are for research into the ozone layer. The sensors will be able to detect increased radiation (especially dangerous types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation) caused by depletion of the ozone layer (the polar ozone holes). This has been caused by chlorinated gases used by humans. Photographed at the Finnish Meteorological Institute's Arctic Research Centre (FMI-ARC),Sodankyla,in Finnish Lapland | |
