MODEL RELEASED. Weather balloon being released by a meteorologist. It contains helium gas, allowing the balloon to rise many kilometres through the atmosphere. A sensor attached below the balloon (in protective styrofoam packaging, white) will measure ozone distribution up to and beyond the ozone layer at 20-30 kilometres altitude. Ozone at this level (formed by sunlight) absorbs dangerous types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. Chlorinated gases used by humans have decreased polar ozone levels, increasing exposure to this UV radiation at high latitudes.
