During a 1987 flight to gather data on the "ozone hole" over Antarctica,American scientist Dr Edward Bowell monitors the readout from his ozone & aerosol measuring experiment on board NASA's DC-8 flying laboratory. Bowell's experiment used laser beams & their reflectance from different atmospheric layers to analyse the chemistry of the atmosphere. He is seen examining the readout of stratospheric aerosols while the DC-8 was flying over the South Pole; on the left is the readout for ozone concentrations. The 1987 research program confirmed that the ozone hole is probably caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),man-made chemicals used in aerosol sprays & refrigerants | |
