Typhoon Saomai and tropical storm Bopha. Satellite image of typhoon Saomai (left) and tropical storm Bopha over the South China Sea on 8th August 2006. The island of Taiwan and mainland China are at upper left. Saomai is the most powerful storm to hit China in 50 years, claiming over 100 lives. Typhoons are huge cyclonic storm systems of high winds blowing around a central eye. They form in areas of relatively calm ocean around the equator. As moist air is forced upwards,a low pressure region forms that becomes the eye of the storm.
