Hurricane Charley approaching the US state of Florida,on 13th August 2004. Cuba is directly below Charley. Mexico is at bottom left and islands of the Caribbean are at centre right. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Charley was classified as a type 4 hurricane. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite | |
