Hurricanes Bonnie and Charley on 11th August 2004 at 14.00 EDT. Hurricane Bonnie (left) is in the Gulf of Mexico, heading for the US state of Florida (upper right from Bonnie). Charley is in the Caribbean Sea,off the coast of Cuba. Mexico is at bottom left. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Bonnie was not classified as a hurricane. Charley was classified as a type 1 (weakest) hurricane. Image taken by the SeaWifs instrument on Orbview-2 satellite | |
