Hurricane Alberto. True-colour satellite image of Hurricane Alberto (white swirl of clouds, centre) in the Atlantic Ocean. Alberto formed in early August 2000 off the Atlantic coast of tropical Africa. It moved north-westwards over the Atlantic Ocean, reaching hurricane strength on 5 August and peak wind speeds of 200 kilometres-per-hour on 12 August as it reached the north-western Atlantic Ocean. It then moved in a large clockwise loop over the northern mid-Atlantic,before moving off northwards and weakening to a normal storm system. A hurricane is a large (hundreds of kilometres across) rotating storm system that forms from strong evaporation over warm tropical waters | |
