Typhoon Violet. Wind speeds and directions in typhoon Violet as calculated from satellite data. Japan is largely covered by cloud at upper centre, whilst South Korea is at upper left. The wind's direction is indicated by the arrows & the wind 's speed by their colour, from blue (2 metres per second) to red (more than 20 metres per second). The winds are swirling round a central clear, calm "eye" where the air pressure is extremely low. Typhoon Violet moved landward over Japan on September 21/22 1996 to cause deaths and severe damage. This image was made by combining data gathered by the GMS-5 satellite & the NSCAT instr- ument on the ADEOS satellite on 20 September 1996 | |
