View into the 'eye' of Typhoon Yuri, seen by the crew of Shuttle Mission STS-44 in late November 1991. This was the first image of the typhoon taken by the crew, and shows a clearly-defined wall to the 'eye'. The clouds lining the wall extend to between 13.8 and 15.3 km,with a cloud base at less than 1km over the sea. Typhoon Yuri formed about 1,500km east of the Philippine Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It eventually covered a diameter of about 1,700km,with winds sustained at 230km per hour and gusting to 270km per hour. Typhoons,or tropical cyclones, are found above 5 degrees latitude and over oceans where the surface temperature is above 27 Celsius | |
