Lorenze Oken 1843 'Insekten' volume from 1843 from the series "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stande",with engravings by Johann Susemihl (1767–1847),and published in Stuttgart by Hoffman between 1839 and 1845. Lorenz Oken (1 August 1779 – 11 August 1851) was a German naturalist, botanist, biologist, and ornithologist. In his day he was respected as a leader of the "Naturphilosophie" movement in Germany. His own development of a taxonomic approach was typical of a pre-darwinian era relying on metaphysics to produce overarching principles. Oken himself was no transformationist - he imagined the spontaneous generation of higher oragnisms from a universal "infusorial mucus" which required the interaction of material nature with the spiritual or absolute. It was all pretty wierd and generally frowned upon in England. Wilberforce even denounced Oken in his debate with Huxley | |
