Yellow Rump (Parus uropygeo luteo) with Rose Bud Orchid (Cleistes divaricata). "The dead bird plate" Plate 58. From German Edition of Mark Catesby re-engraved by Seligmann and published 1768. Mark Catesby (24 March 1682/83 – 23 December 1749) was a pioneering English naturalist in North America. Between 1729 and 1747 Catesby published his Natural History of Carolina,Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America. His naturalistic view of illustration even included dead birds when that is what was available. Here a Yellow rump songbird has met an undefined death on the end of a thread. Catesby's work was said to have inspired Audubon to illustrate animals in a natural setting of associated plants | |
