Lithograph Published 1842,Paris for "Scenes de la vie privee et publique des animaux" by Jean Ignace Isidore Gerard (J. J. Grandville Pseud). The low esteem in which many surgeon doctors were held by the public is here shown in satirical print. The prospects for the alarmed patient look poor, with a variety of scavengers welcomed around his bedside and attendance by predatory doctors. In the 19th century surgery without anaesthetic and a proper understanding of hygeine resulted in many deaths and morbidities for the sick and wounded unlucky enough to require such treatment | |
