Young Woman of Otahiette (Tahiti). Hand coloured engraving from "A New Royal Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography Antient and Modern" BANKES,BLAKE and COOK. Printed for J Cooke at Shakeseares Head (1790). Joseph Banks famously did little to publish his own observations from Cook's voyages, but the images from the artist Webster were generally seen in this series of books. Joseph Banks had admiration for the people of Tahiti and had affairs with the women he encountered. His journal 2nd May 1769 notes (sic) " she then once more displayd her naked beauties and immediately marchd up to me. I took her by the hand and led her to the tents acompanied by another woman, her freind,to both of them I made presents but could not prevail upon them to stay more than an hour". Banks became president of the Royal Society but remained more than typically libertarian in outlook | |
