A similar design could be executed in a variety of materials and in a similar cultural periods. Here shafthole axes are produced in four different materials often used to define the prehistoric ages of man. From left an antler axe, copper axe, bronze axe and stone axe. All these axes are presumed to date from between 3500 to 2000 BCE and hence only span the neolithic to bronze age divide. The stone and antler axes may actually be the latest in date (approx 2000 BC) showing that use of a particular material cannot always be used to signify a particular date | |
