John Thomas Gulick (March 13,1832 - April 14,1923) was an American missionary and naturalist from Hawaii. He performed some of the first modern evolutionary studies, starting with a collection of Hawaiian land snails. He was highly influential in starting the road to the modern evolutionary synthesis. Romanes said of him in 1897 "to his essays on the subject I attribute a higher value than to any other work in the field of Darwinian thought since the date of Darwin's death". He hypothesised that human societal evolution had been influenced by altruistic tendencies | |
