Pluto and Charon. Colour-enhanced composite image of dwarf planet Pluto (lower right) and it largest moon Charon (upper left),from NASA's New Horizons spacecraft. Pluto and Charon lie in the Kuiper Belt, some 40 times further from the Sun than Earth. Pluto has a surface with regions of dark, light and orange land which change with the seasons, indicating complex geology and climate. There are differences between Pluto and Charon in both colour and brightness, and similarities between Charon's polar red terrain and Pluto's equatorial red terrain. They are shown here with approximately correct relative sizes, but their separation is not to scale. Data obtained by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC) on July 14,2015 | |
