Cardiac ablation surgery. Surgeons using an X-ray machine (upper left) and the resulting X-ray (on screen) to check the placement of catheters in a patient's heart. They are carrying out cardiac ablation,a technique that uses the catheters to heat or freeze tissue to ablate (destroy) tissue to reset the coronary rhythm. This technique is usually used to treat arrhythmia (an irregular heart beat). The catheters are inserted at a point in the groin (centre left) and pushed through the circulatory system to reach the heart. Photographed in the UK | |
