Charles Fox (1749-1806). 1856 illustration of the British politician Charles James Fox. Fox was a an outspoken Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned 38 years. He was a prominent opponent of George III and supported the American Patriots during the American War of Independence. During the same period,he became well-known as having some of the most radical opinions of the era. He was the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger and after being forced from government in 1783 by the King he spent the next 22 years in opposition.
