Predicted annular solar eclipse of 1820. Diagram prepared fourteen years earlier to show the expected appearance of the solar eclipse of 7 September 1820,as seen from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It was not certain whether the eclipse would be partial or annular when viewed from this location. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun,leaving a ring of sunlight visible. The eclipse was observed to be annular when it took place. The labels (in Dutch) indicate East (left),West (right),and the start (right) and end (left). These calculations and diagrams were prepared in 1806 by Dutch astronomer Lambertus Nieuwenhuis | |
