French Morse code alphabet. Historical illustration of a French alphabet version of the Morse code used in telegraphy. This code of long and short dashes was demonstrated in 1838 by US inventor Samuel Morse (1791-1872) and used in his telegraph system. This version includes letters with diacritics ('a','e','o' and 'u'). Numbers are across centre. Across bottom are punctuation marks and signal conventions labelled in French (virgule = forward slash; trait d'union = hyphen; attente = waiting).
