Plante accumulator battery. Historical illustration of the accumulator (storage) lead-acid battery designed by French physicist Gaston Plante (1834-1889). Plante is famous for inventing this lead-acid battery in 1859. It consisted of lead plates wound around a wooden cylinder, with the plates separated by a cloth and soaked in acid. If a battery was connected to this device, the charge would be accumulated and could be stored for later use. Here, the set-up is being used to power an electric arc lamp (upper centre).
