Flexner taught at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania before becoming the first director (1901 to 1935) of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation. Flexner worked on experimental epidemiology and venoms,poliomyelitis,serum treatment of cerebrospinal meningitis,and for isolating a bacillus of dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae).
