20 years of the World Wide Web. Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau (left,born 1947) and British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee (centre,born 1955) at a demonstration of the NeXT computer on which Berners-Lee developed the Web in 1989. This machine was also the first Web server. Cailliau,a systems engineer at CERN,worked with Berners-Lee on the World Wide Web project. Both worked on the hypertext system now used in the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee was knighted in 2004. Cailliau retired in 2005.
