Early demography research. 17th-century table of deaths in London from a pioneering work by English author John Graunt (1620-1674). This table was published in Graunt's 'Observations on the Bills of Mortality' (1662). Causes of death are listed and counted by year, with a 20-year total at right. This was the first rigorous statistical analysis of London's population,an early example of public health statistics. One aim was to improve tracking of epidemics, such as the major outbreak of plague recorded in 1636 (10,400 deaths). Graunt was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1662 | |
