Wright brothers Kitty Hawk glider. Launch of a test flight of the 1902 glider built and flown on beaches near Kitty Hawk,North Carolina,USA,by US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Orville Wright (1871-1948) is piloting the glider. Wilbur Wright (centre,1867-1912) and local fisherman Daniel Tate are holding the ends of the glider. The Wrights carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902,prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). This glider design includes a rebuilt single vertical rudder. Hundreds of glides took place in 1902,the longest of 190 metres took 26 seconds. Photographed on 10 October 1902 | |
