Galaxy types 4 billion years ago. Montage of galaxy images illustrating the morphology of galaxies 4 billion years ago. Galaxies are classified by what is known as the Hubble Sequence. The Hubble Sequence is tuning-fork-shaped,starting with elliptical galaxies (left),passing through lenticular galaxies (centre) and diverging along two branches of spiral galaxies (right). This Hubble Sequence has remained constant as far back as 11 billion years ago, some 80 percent of the universe's history. These results are from CANDELS (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey). For related images, see C023/3010 to C023/3013 | |
